India's Second Scorpene-Class Submarine Khanderi, Some Key Facts You Need To Know

 

Khanderi, India's second Scorpene-class attack submarine was launched at Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on 12 Jan, 2017. This massive and powerful submarine is designed in collaboration with France's Direction des Constructions Navales or DCN and the engine is powered by Diesel-electric. The Scorpene project has been in the news lately after details emerged of leaked technical data, but the Indian Navy believes the leak of information - published by an Australian daily - does not compromise the operational prowess of the submarines.

1. The Submarine is equipped with superior stealth technology
2. The Submarine will counter activities of China in Indian Ocean
3. Khanderi is named after an island fort of the Marathas which ensured their supremacy at sea in the late 17th century.
4. It is capable to undertake missions such as anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, Mine laying and area surveillance.
5. It is specially designed to operate in all theatres including tropics.
6. India is among a few countries in the world which produce conventional submarines. Its submarine arm completes 50 years in December this year. Submarine Day is celebrated on December 8, the day when the first submarine, the INS Kalvari, was inducted into the Indian Navy in 1967.
