Google DeepMind AI Will Help Detect Eye Diseases

Google’s DeepMind division is its artificial intelligence company acquired in 2014. Now DeepMind wants to utilise AI in something different- medical field. It has teamed up with UK’s NHS (National Health Service) in order to test AI’s utility in patient care. The news is that it will use machine learning to analyse one million anonymised eye scans supplied by the Moorfields Eye Hospital. This is to test if AI can help examine scans with greater efficiency or with a higher degree of accuracy than traditional methods which may lead to earlier detection and timely intervention.

There have been objections in the past regarding patient data being used by these companies but DeepMind has stressed that the eye scans it will be using have been collected by Moorfields over a long period of time which will make it impossible to identify any individual just on the basis of the scans. If the research by DeepMind proves to be successful, it would mean a new dawn in eye care as it may mean that many people get to retain their eyesight, conditions such as diabetic retinopathy can be prevented or limited if timely diagnosis is done. Well what we can say id- let us hope for the best!
