People visiting a recent exhibition in China were smitten by the beauty of the girl standing near the entrance of the exhibition hall that hosted this year’s 2016 Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin, in a major port city in North China. But they were in for a surprise when they learned that the pretty girl wearing the traditional Chinese dress and hairstyle with the classic hairpin was actually a robot. The name of the robot is Jia Jia and it is so creepily similar to humans that you wouldn’t believe at the first sight that it is just a machine or a cyborg. This life-like cyborg has been created or built by Chen Xiaoping and his colleagues at the University of Science and Technology of China.
The team had to put in three years’ worth of time and efforts to complete this robot. Jia jia is not only beautiful to look at but is very smart too. It can speak, show micro-expressions, and move its lips and body. The humanoid has natural eye movement, speech that is in sync with its lip movement and refers to its male creators as ‘lords’. It has been programmed to recognize human/machine interaction, has autonomous position and navigation and offers services based on cloud technology. It is actually her ‘brain’ which is a huge online database connected to a cloud computing platform that allows her to enhance her ability to process emotions and speech as new data is uploaded. The humanoid can easily have conversation with those who ask her any questions and can respond in less than a second. She can even recognise the facial expressions of others. The cyborg is really ‘one of its kind’!
