LG Innotek- a subsidiary of LG which makes bold smartphones, TVs, robot vacuum cleaners and hi-tech refrigerators- keeps developing innovative cutting-edge technology that may find its use in the future machines and technologies. In the past, the company has successfully made invisible fingerprint sensor for smartphones and wide angle camera modules. Continuing with its innovative streak, the company has developed a new pressure sensor that is flexible, durable and able to withstand extreme temperatures. This is to note that the current commercial pressure sensors tend to be coin-shaped and made from rigid materials while this new pressure sensor is bendable and has the ability to measure the level of external forces across its entire surface.
The new flexible sensor is durable and can work in temperatures ranging from -40° C to 80° C (-40° F to 176° F). It is made from highly elastic polyurethane which makes it well suited to be used in wearables. The material is inserted between electronic fibres with electric poles detecting deformation in the material and that information is then used to quantify the amount of pressure being applied. The sensor is so heavy-duty that according to the company, it will work even after an average man weighing 70 kg (154lb), has sat on it 100,000 times. The company thinks that these flexible sensors can easily be used in smart sports gear, in injury rehabilitation and even in automatically adjusting car seats. But since it is at its concept stage only, the possibility of seeing these things materialise lies far in the future.
